#justdoit the colours of autumn

It’s probably no great secret to long term readers of the blog that I like the Autumn or Fall season. I’m lucky in my occupation gives me time out and availability to capture and enjoy the seasons that perhaps nine to fiver’s don’t get. Shelfie2 is underway and I’m hoping to build on trials I’ve previously done to capture the subtlety of the Autumn season of the UK. Just occasionally we get those wow!, moments, and this morning I was able to spend a couple of hours just capturing the light and enjoying the serenity of a beautiful October sunrise. There’s no filters here, what you see, is what I got.

The location? Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire.

Don’t miss these opportunities, sometimes capturing life’s more important than toy trains!

Just do it!

Throwback Thursday Trees

Earlier in the year I was in the Mancave looking at the changeover between the 3D model and the backscene. Today’s seen quite a change..

As we’re getting into the Autumn I spend a good amount of time looking at the scenery around me, it’s definitely my favourite season.

Regularly bike riding a particular route allows me to watch the change of the season and it’s long been a desire to effectively capture it. Today saw me ‘plant’ the rear tree grouping along roughly 5/6th’s of the layouts length. These are Woodland Scenics armatures with three colours, car undercoat black and grey, and a wash of acrylic burnt umber to put a bit of warmth into the overall blend. I want to achieve a see through appearance, so the use of pastiche and scatter material is helping with transparency to the backscene.

The backscene is currently sheets of mounting card with various profiles and colours/tones sprayed on it for testing, to get the right overall colour balance. The lighting rig needs to be designed and fitted too so I anticipate a bit of additional work with colouring once that’s defined and fitted.

In natural light the colour so far looks effective, so I’ll continue until the rear of the layout is completed and then fix the backscene and lighting rig. I anticipate the overall depth of the layout increasing by a couple of inches to reduce shadowing on the backscene and a little extra foreground lighting. Then it’s final fix of the bridge, view blocks, and the small coppice at the right hand end to be replaced. So far, so good..

On the subject of ‘good’, Geoff Forster’s back writing again. Some readers will be familiar with the Llangunllo blog and its inspirational capture of the Welsh borderlands. If you liked that, you’ll like this:

Heljan Telford 2018 O gauge and OO gauge announcements

This morning there’s a very interesting press release from Heljan at the 2018 Telford O gauge show. God news for 7mm modellers with the popular GWR AEC Railcar and BR Class 56 Diesels being announced below, but for the 4mm modellers amongst us there news of the AEC Railcar being covered in OO gauge too!

HELJAN LEADS THE WAY IN GAUGE ‘O’ WITH THREE EXCITING NEW PROJECTS

Support for British Gauge O modelling continues with an all-new Great Western Railway AEC Railcar, BR Class 56 heavy freight diesel and fully re-tooled BR Class 33 diesel offering new variants of this popular BRCW Type 3.

GWR AEC Railcar

AECHJ

Heljan AEC Railcar O Gauge OO Gauge

To complement the growing selection of HELJAN GWR/Western Region steam locomotives, we’re working on the first ever ready-to-run Gauge O model of the classic GWR AEC ‘razor edge’ railcar (Nos. 19-33). The perfect single vehicle branch line train for steam and transition era GWR/WR layouts, these pioneering vehicles were the predecessors of modern railcars and DMUs and retain a cult following decades later. The specification of the O gauge model will include:

Fine detail inside and out, discreet mechanism, LED lighting functions, Sprung buffers and couplings. Designed for easy DCC and sound installation, and interior lighting

PROPOSED LIVERIES

1900: GWR chocolate/cream (white roof and monogram)

1901: GWR chocolate/cream (dark grey roof and GWR coat of arms)

1903: BR crimson/cream (white cab roofs)

1904: BR green with speed whiskers (white cab roofs)

1905: BR green with speed whiskers (grey roof)

As well as the Gauge O model, we are working on an all-new version of the same railcar for OO gauge, further details of which will be announced at a later date. However, we expect it to have a similar specification and choice of liveries to its larger sister. (Image copyright Brian Daniels)

BR Class 56 Co-Co diesel

HJ CL56

Heljan O Gauge Class 56

Fine detail, Twin motors for heavy haulage, LED lighting functions,

See-through grilles, Sprung buffers and couplings, Designed for easy DCC and sound installation, Provision for smoke unit.

Motivation Monday, Brown…

Yup, Brown! Ok admittedly brown isn’t often the ‘go to’ colour for inspiration, but today, it is.

This past week I’ve been in mid Wales, an area of the UK often overlooked in terms of landscapes the island has to offer. The 2018 summer has been exceptionally dry too, this underlined by the very low levels in the Welsh reservoirs, with areas that have been underwater for decades being uncovered by the receding waters.

The last time this bridge was seen was approximately forty years ago!

So, lots and lots of ‘brown’ then. One thing that is so often seen on layouts is brown trees, we’re taught that as kids almost, paint a tree, the trunk is brown, it’s wood, all wood is brown, and leaves are green, so the stereotype colours of trees is imprinted at an early age. Shelfie2 has taken a bit of a sabbatical over the past month or so with attention being diverted to three real trees, the removal of them that is…

With those out of the way thoughts turned to the woodlands which will form Shelfie2’s background.

One thing the natural light shows here is the colour cast is too cool, too much grey (the trees) providing an improper colour balance. Spending last week amongst the hills of central Wales subconsciously drew that to my attention. Just spending time looking at the layout yesterday and today was flagging the change needed. One way to add warmth to a scene is to add from the red and orange spectrum, so I pulled the loose fitted trees from the layout and gave them a very diluted wash of acrylic burnt umber. As they dried I wondered if I’d done the right thing, the colour was quite vivid and very much in the red! However they have now dried to a very pleasing grey/brown natural colour which will lift the overall colours of the layout.

The only trouble is these, which are already fixed, doh! In can see some more felling taking place now, who’d have thought brown could be so interesting?
