Lights, Camera, Action..

This week I’ve been scratching my head quite a bit. Shelfie2 is reaching the final assembly stage. I’ve decided to go ‘hands free’ operation and have spent a good bit of time getting Dingham couplings to work, which I’ll write about in the next couple of weeks.

Having got the coupling issue resolved that gives me further opportunities in the scenic display. If we don’t need the hand of god getting in the way, or me or the team blundering around in front of the train set, then I can potentially do more scenic stuff front of house. So I’m now getting the lighting rig together with a bit of a yippee moment earlier today. The display is view and operate from the front, and like Shelfie1 a wraparound backscene. I’ve changed to LED strip lighting of 4000k and you can see the first trials here.

One thing I need to hide is the shadows thrown on the backdrop by the foreground trees, this was tested and a single downlight batten will run almost full length at the rear, to try this I rigged up lining paper along the rear of the layout.

This gives a really good feeling on the final appearance for minimal cost. Albion Yard and Shelfie1 used a photo print backscene with an image kindly supplied by Chris Nevard Albion Yard Backscene . This time I’m looking at painting my own. Again Chris Nevard has provided interesting thoughts and ideas for the technique Fountain Colliery and initial testing has been promising. My happy moment today has been discovering a potential backscene material of 1mm thick sign printers foamboard. I’ve tried the 2mm thick version and flooded it with paint both acrylic and enamel, so far it’s taken it with no detriment. It’s not going to be cheap, but I’ll get (I hope), a rigid 10ft section that I can paint and form into the wrap round backscene I want. The backscene will be very simple, just faint hill outlines in the distance that can be seen through the layout trees.

This the test piece, Halfords acrylic sprays, primer white, grey, Matt black, and Ford Tuscan Beige for a bit of warmth, and to add some finescale hair shirt tweediness to it, (so essential).

It’s a simple but very effective backscene that doesn’t overpower the foreground, so that’s the next stage.

Another issue is shadow from the lights themselves and so far this appears minimal.

This shows the effect with the man cave lights on and just the rear downlighting rigged.

This is with downlighting only, when the front bar goes in it’ll be lower and forward of the scenic edge, giving full foreground light and filling the rear corners. The presentation again like Albion Yard and Shelfie1 will be enclosed letterbox style. Track height from floor is about 55 inches, with the Dinghams, I may just take it a little higher. So the next couple of weeks should see Shelfie2 complete, then I’ve got the next one to tick off the bucket list!

Still it’s Warley this weekend, I’m sure I won’t come back with any new ideas, lol as the kids say!

Hattons 14xx Finale

Well here it is, the end game has been played for this one I think. It’s been a frustrating journey for such a pretty model. Starting with my initial thoughts here https://albionyard.wordpress.com/2017/03/01/hattons-djm-14xx-review-h1410/, and the subsequent trials and tribulations with the chassis https://albionyard.wordpress.com/2017/03/20/14xx-frustration/.

The locomotive sat on the shelf of doom for the best part of a year, and a re-organisation of the man cave identified a few fast fixes, this being one of them. After the chassis mods, it’s still running on a reduced drive with replacement coupling rods, I decided to bite the bullet and complete it. There were two standout visual compromises for me, the cab glazing and the lack of ash pan with also a lack of brake pull rods.

There’s no question the cab is nicely detailed, but it has an internal front wall giving a double glazing appearance. As part of the breakdown I did I removed all components and removed the inner wall. Once this was done I replaced the glazing flush glazing the front windows, it makes a massive difference!

I discarded the rear glazing too with the prominent rear window bars the lack of glazing isn’t noticeable, apart from there’s no prism effects!

Cab shutters and roof vents were opened and replaced, allowing light into the cab, making the best of the interior detail.

Whilst still in two minds regarding replacing the chassis the ash pan was next on the list.

The brake pull rods aft of the rear drivers isn’t represented and for the time being I’ve left those off, they’re not too noticeable, but I may revisit them in future. A simple H frame was made, and the outline copied from a drawing, this has been lightly glued the final effect above filling a very noticeable gap on the underframe.

So as 1430 around 1957 this is it, just the auto gear to add and a light weathering. It still cogs on gradients, but the layout design may not use different levels so the impact will be negligible. The changes have been worth it, the biggest improvement being the coupling rods. The engine doesn’t look sloppy when it runs, both axles turn in synch, and that definitely improves the slow running.

Earlier today I had the pleasure of operating Geoff Taylor’s Cambrian layout and watched his example working without hesitation across the scenic sections, and the hidden inclines.

So that’s my 14xx then, into operating stock.

I’m pleased it is, but still frustrated that it’s not as good as it looks, or as it can be :-/

Bachmann Class 121 at Spalding

Bachmann Class 121 35-525

Bachmann Class 121 35-525

Bachmann Class 121 35-525

Bachmann Class 121 35-525

Today at the Spalding show the EP for Bachmann’s BR class 121 is on display. Due in about 12 months time it’ll be worth the wait. Underframe details look exceptional including the speedometer drive from bogie to chassis. The internal seating etc look full depth and better defined than Dapol’s 121/122, and that’s far from a bad model. Later variants with different buffers etc are also planned. At a similar price to the Dapol version it could be a tough choice!

#justdoit the colours of autumn

It’s probably no great secret to long term readers of the blog that I like the Autumn or Fall season. I’m lucky in my occupation gives me time out and availability to capture and enjoy the seasons that perhaps nine to fiver’s don’t get. Shelfie2 is underway and I’m hoping to build on trials I’ve previously done to capture the subtlety of the Autumn season of the UK. Just occasionally we get those wow!, moments, and this morning I was able to spend a couple of hours just capturing the light and enjoying the serenity of a beautiful October sunrise. There’s no filters here, what you see, is what I got.

The location? Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire.

Don’t miss these opportunities, sometimes capturing life’s more important than toy trains!

Just do it!
