
In the summer before we all melted I got into Shelfie 5 . Then the summer took over and trips down route and today I’ve been messing about with it again. A couple of dry joint have been exposed by the hot weather, better now though than in the heat of an exhibition hall!
The running properties of the 08’s are pretty good but not outstanding. I’m running DC currently, but will try DCC to see if that makes a noticeable difference. The Peco track has worked well and I’m very happy with the MP1 point motors, they are reliable and quiet, and their size being that of a matchbox in depth really has benefited the use on these shallow depth boards. The crossing frog switching is another reason I’ll almost certainly use them in the future.
Couldn’t long and uncoupling still needs improvement. The RTR fitted units are ok, but visually obtrusive. I’ve some DG types to try which with the large radius Peco points may work well.
In the stores are a pair of Peco’s PL25 electromagnetic uncoupling units for trial, sand I’m intrigued as to how they perform, as I’ve not yet knowingly seen them in use.

So that’s the state of play at the moment, steady progress.

Shelfie 3 is still WIP and I’ve been working out optimal locations for the electromagnets for parcels stock. I have three permanent track magnets and currently two electromagnets which I’m happy with, it’s nice to be able to run dmu tail traffic and operate the removal from the train completely hands free, it definitely adds play value.

Developing the bridge on Shelfie 5 has also reawakened the need to do the same on Shelfie 3, as well as the couplings in the other direction, Shelfie 3 inspiring Shelfie 5!
