Essential Witness and Transition

Essential Witness and Transition are two books that do that rare thing of capturing the railway in an engaging and artistic way. Each book contains the work of one photographer, Jim Shaughnessy for Essential Witness, and Colin Gifford for Transition.

Essential Witness edges it as my favourite between the two, not only are the images superb, the page design just works for me.

The simple discrete caption, and at the back of the book thumbnail images with extended notes.

Transition, has a similar layout, though not quite so ‘clean’, frustratingly whilst it has simple numbered captions, there’s no extension to them. The images are like those of Witness, brilliant and interesting and I feel the book misses a trick without better captions.

Print quality is brilliant, on good quality paper, blacks are deep blacks, and whites like crisp fresh snow, with all the tonal values between. Both are entirely monochrome, the subject matter really suiting the style of both artists. All weathers are included adding to the atmosphere the images convey, New York State winters really look cold, Manchester, looks wet. There’s very few platform 3/4 shots, the photographers capture both intimate portraits, and trains in the landscape equally well adding to the value of the images. The books will suit modellers, there’s plenty of line side details to study, both in terms of railway equipment, and era specific items like vehicles and clothing. Both volumes cover the change over era’s between the Steam and Diesel era’s, more so with Colin Giffords’s Transition. If you’re after a good book to just kick back and enjoy, both of these definitely fit the bill.

If you take your time you’ll find real value in either book for prototype information, more importantly though you’re likely to just have a really relaxing and enjoyable few hours. Just immerse yourself in the skills and artistry of the images, rare quality in such an accessible format. Printed media is not dead yet!

NMRA Motivation Monday

Bob Phelps receives the NMRA’s distinguished service award Saturday 13th July 2019 from NMRA President Pete Magoun, at the NMRA National Train Show in Utah.

So why’s this of interest? Bob, principal product design engineer worked for Peco for 54, yep fifty four years.. 1963 -2016! Many of us, will have at some stage in our modelling life, used a component that Bob has had involvement in, particularly in the UK. Not only is Bob a talented engineer, as anyone whom has met him will know he’s a brilliant modeller too, and a genuinely nice guy. On a visit to Peco delivering ‘Collier Street’, Bob showed me a plasticard scratch built body for a US steam locomotive. The quality was outstanding, the equal of anything else I’ve seen in the same medium.

If I take a look at the bigger picture, and where Peco products are sold it’s not an exaggeration to note that Bob has literally had a world wide influence on the hobby.

World wide, fifty years…..

That for both Bob and his colleagues within Peco, is an extraordinary achievement, and sets a hard act to follow.

Having said that, in the past couple of years Peco are obviously continuing with a similar, effective progress, code 75 Bullhead in OO, the recent announcement of US code 70 track work, in addition to their well established Code 83 products.

It’s really pleasing to see Bob, and others, including companies getting recognition in this manner, long may it continue.

Throwback Thursday , Paint

Whilst waiting for more tree making material to arrive, I’ve turned to a trial of the backscene. I’m using a similar technique to that I used here, Setting the Scene where myself and the late Roy Jackson painted the sky/backscene on Geoff Kent’s ‘Black Lion Crossing’. Roy and I subsequently painted Retford’s backscene too. We did one piece to give it ‘a coat of looking at’, decided it worked, and then thought ‘#### it’, we may as well do the rest now. We did the 60ft or so in a couple of hours, such is the speed of the technique.

This technique is an adaptation of a process my fellow beer test pilot Chris Nevard uses. Using simple masks, effects like the hills above can be added using spray cans and non detailed specific shapes can be quickly represented.

Using a generic light sky blue will throw back a lot of ‘blue’ light onto the layout, so I’m already toning that down with the use of mixes of greys and whites. It might seem a lot of work to do as a test piece, this is 10ft long and 18 inches tall, but this will give me the real impact of the final appearance. It’s quite a quick process, the emulsion and acrylic sprays are fast drying. Whilst I’m confident the blue I’ve chosen is a good base point, until it’s under lighting and ‘joined’ to the existing scenery I won’t really know. As it’s on lining paper I’ll see too how the base coat reacts to being flexed when fitted. Once it’s on I’ll get the right feeling for the colour balance required, and recession needed for the real thing.

Whilst this dries I can get access to the back of the tree line and do some more work with that, which requires a little more structure to be visible, and raise the rear lighting batten to get a better, more diffused down wash.

Are we nearly dry yet?….

Good Night and Thanks For Your Service..

Well a few times I’ve mentioned on here that it’s game over. Today, it is.

Developments here mean that Albion Yard has ‘left the building’. All the neat stuff has been saved, and wiring, motors and some track too. But the core layout? Nup, gone.

It was a bit of a tough choice I’ll admit, even once recyclable stuff had been removed, however the trigger had been pulled, and the past is a foreign land.

The layout taught me a huge amount, presentation, reliability, serviceability, how to exhibit too. It helped develop some brilliant friendships, introduced some of my friends to exhibiting too, and has been a photo and film set in its lifetime.

A vote of thanks to those guys, and to the exhibition managers who accepted it, and the magazine teams who featured it.

Thank you to you readers. Some of you have followed this from the early fotopic and Yahoo group days, that makes the layout about fifteen years old. Makes you think that one, doesn’t it!

It’s been emotional geezers…..

Great Central Grand Day Out

This weekend it’s the Great Central Model Railway show centred around operating real trains, and the Model Railway Exhibition at Quorn station. It’s the first time I’ve been as a punter and for £23.00 including all day parking very good value for money I thought. I’m not into preserved railway lines at all so this was a pleasant change, and the opportunity to get the drivers view out of the rear of a Class 101 DMU and inhale huge amounts of diesel fumes!

I did take the opportunity to catch up with some friends in the trade, and saw a couple of things of note on the Peco stand. Firstly the prototype medium radius Bullhead point was on display.

Peco Medium Radius Point

It looks the same overall configuration as their existing large radius point and will feature the unifrog design.

Peco Code 75 Bullhead point

The toe of the point and tie bar again appears to be of the same type as the existing large radius, with a single piece point blade joggled into the running rails.

I didn’t ask on delivery times, but as the crossings and slips are I believe estimated to be available at the last quarter this year, I’m expecting these to be 2020 release. If I can get delivery updates I’ll post them here in due course.

Next a pleasant signal box surprise from Peco, rather than Ratio or Wills. This kit going into the Peco Lineside Kit range as LK-201

Peco Highland Railway Signal Box LK-201

This is a Highland Railway Signal Box in 4mm scale. It certainly captures the look and feel of a highland box and tooling/production well under way, and I think will prove very popular.

Peco LK-201 Signal Box

Delivery on this one expected later this year it’s also got that light railway look, so I expect to see a few variations of it around as modellers modify the base model. The GWR wartime brick built Signal Box development model was also in evidence and a early reworking of the LNER grain van from the Parkside range in 4mm scale.

A little further up at the Dapol stand two things caught my eye, the first an early decorated sample of the 7mm 14xx tank locomotive.

Dapol O Gauge 14xx 7s-006-021s

Dapol 7mm 14xx

Dapol O Gauge 14xx

Like the Peco Highland Box earlier this model captures the character of the engine very well. Unlike their 57xx the inside valve gear is rigid for the 14’s, however the static representation is very promising. I can see this model being bought by people ‘just because!’

The next thing which caught my eye was a 4mm OO ex LSWR B4 tank locomotive in their ‘not quite perfect’ sale. These are items that have minor blemishes or problems that can be fixed with a bit of application, or ignored!

Dapol 4s-018-093 LSWR B4

The fault on this example is the cab steps not being quite square. The running is impeccable, the lead axle having a rocking compensation, and worth a closer look in the future. There’s some really good small engines available at the moment, this will be converted to an industrial locomotive, with a simple repaint for a future ‘Shelfie’ project.

If you’ve got time today or tomorrow, this exhibition and rail riding combination, makes for an interesting day out.

Heljan OO Class 45/1

Heljan OO Peak Class 45

Today Heljan are announcing their all new Derby/Sulzer Type 4 in ‘OO’. This model is currently being tooled and featuring a large number of authentic detail variations – including the first-ever accurate models of ETH-fitted Class 45/1s. The first examples due in 2020. I’m very interested in this release as it shows manufacturer’s aren’t afraid to revisit ‘exisiting’ models.

Clearly there’s no significant blocks to producing a prototype in model form, that’s been previously released by a third party. Being an enduring and popular class, there’s likely to be sufficient space in the market for both products, the Heljan release being higher priced, but not significantly so. The Cads shown here indicate more detailing particularly around the chassis and bogie, so perhaps we’ll see a market split along the lines of those that want more detail, and those that prefer a more ‘basic’ model. With Heljan’s 25/3 going into decoration samples, and Bachmann’s 117 DMU and class 24 well advanced, recent Mk2 and Mk3 releases in BR blue, are we seeing the ‘Blue Wave’ coming ashore? We’re now well into the time line that many feel the hobby represents, the thirty to forty year gap for the alleged sweet spot in the market for manufacturers, where us geeks recall the heady days before wine, women, song, and all those other distractions capture our attention for a few years!

HELJAN’s next ‘OO’ gauge BR diesel locomotive project will be an all-new Class 45, celebrating the 60th anniversary of this popular class in 2020.
No fewer than four versions are being prepared initially, depicting vacuum-braked and steam-heated locomotives in split-centre headcode condition, dual-braked, steam heat Class 45/0s with rebuilt ‘sealed beam’ nose ends and, for the first time, accurate models of Class 45/1s with or without the high-intensity headlight fitted in their final years.

Heljan OO Class 45

With a good selection of ‘OO’ gauge air-conditioned Mk2 coaches now available, we are seeing increasing demand for an accurate ETH-fitted ‘Peak’ suitable to haul them. Class 45/1 is believed to be the largest sub-class of BR diesel locomotives never to have been available in RTR form. Our models will fill that important gap in the BR first generation diesel fleet.

The Class 45s are well known for the myriad detail variations across the class and our models will reflect that with a wide range of authentic differences according period, livery, sub-class and individual locomotives.
Variations will include open or plated boiler steps and roof hatches, bodyside grilles or plated panels (or a combination of both), original or modernised underframe tanks with air cylinders, optional inner sandboxes and boiler hatch covers and more.
The models build on the research and development that went into our well-received ‘O’ gauge Class 45 and many of the fine details seen on that model have been incorporated into its little sisters. Other features include a 21-pin DCC interface, NEM coupler pockets neatly designed as part of the bufferbeams, ample provision for DCC sound installation, LED lighting appropriate to each version and separately switched cab and tail lights.

The first batch will cover a broad cross-section of BR green, BR blue and special liveries from the early-1960s to the late-1980s. Production of each version will be strictly limited and early ordering is recommended to avoid disappointment.
Detailed design work was completed earlier this year and tooling is in progress and first releases planned in the third quarter of 2020. Suggested Retail Price (SRP) is £169, or £179 for factory-weathered editions.

We’re also delighted to be working with Rails of Sheffield and Kernow Model Rail Centre to offer a trio of exclusive editions. Rails has selected D65 Grenadier Guardsman in 1960s BR green with small yellow panels and 45060 Sherwood Forester in 1980s BR blue with sealed beam nose ends. KMRC has looked to the final years of the Class 45/1s with 45110 Medusa in weathered BR blue with high intensity headlight and ‘unofficial’ Tinsley decoration. Further details are available on the Rails and KMRC websites.
All the above information about this project is subject to alteration. Look out for updates on the HELJAN Facebook page and in the model railway press.

Really depressing news for the exhibition circuit today. Recently we’ve seen prototype preservation organisations suffer vandalism, and this is the first time (I recall) a similar issue  within the hobby at a show.

Please make sure if you’re exhibiting you make a realistic assessment of the value of your ‘stuff’, both for the organisers benefit, and yourselves. We all know we will never get back the true value of our time and effort in a claim, for some of these guys this will be the mental equivalent of a break in and vandalism at home.

For any reader whose work and labour of love has been damaged in this event, please try and dust yourself down, and push forward with the hobby.

So easy to write, so much harder to do.
